On 27 January, Prof. Hilde De Weerdt, Dr. Rainer Simon, Dr. Sunkyu Lee and Dawn Zhuang presented a workshop titled “Annotating and Transcribing IIIF Images with IMMARKUS” at IIIF 2026 online meeting.
In this workshop, participants were introduced to key concepts and hands-on workflows for digital image annotation with IMMARKUS (immarkus.xmarkus.org), a semantic image annotation service designed by the presenters. IMMARKUS supports commercial, open, and custom-designed AI models to select image parts or transcribe and translate text in various languages. From the built-in knowledge graph, users can visualize and query image annotations, relationships, and metadata, and export results for further data analysis.
The workshop covered how to:
- assemble and organize IIIF images (possibly in combination with local user images)
- annotate image regions and transcribe text in images with a variety of tools including various AI services
- add relationships between elements in and across the images
- create custom ontologies to identify and annotate image regions and their relationships, or to add metadata
- import and add metadata
- visualize and query annotations and metadata
- export annotations along with metadata and image snippets for further analysis
