On 4 June, the RegInfra team, together with Dr. Rainer Simon, will present a workshop titled Visual Exploration and Creative Logs with IMMARKUS during the workshop day of the 2026 IIIF Annual Conference & Showcase.

In this workshop, participants will gain hands-on experience with the research and creative arts applications of IMMARKUS (immarkus.xmarkus.org), a semantic IIIF image annotation service designed by the presenters. IMMARKUS supports commercial, open, and custom-designed AI models to select image parts, transcribe, extract, and translate text in various languages. From the built-in knowledge graph, users can visualize and query image annotations, relationships, and metadata, and export results for further data analysis. We will also show new development, including entity and event extraction from image-based materials and the combination of IIIF image regions into online creative logs.

Participants will learn how to:

•  assemble and organize IIIF images (also in combination with local user images)

•  annotate image regions, transcribe and extract entity and event data from text in images with a variety of tools including various AI services

•  add relationships between elements in and across the images

•  create custom ontologies to identify and annotate image regions and their relationships, or to add metadata

•  import, extract, and manually add metadata

•  visualize and query annotations and metadata

•  export annotations along with metadata and image snippets for further analysis

•  create art logs or notebooks with IIIF image selections
